PIETER SMOUT is born in 1979 in Mechelen (Belgium). After his high school degree he decided to dedicate his life to the piano.

During his student period 1997 – 2003, Pieter achieved a master degree of classical piano at the royal conservatory of Brussels in the class of professor Jan Michiels. Masterclasses of jazz and free improvisation he did with Kris Defoort, Pierre Anckaert and Bob Mover. Apart from his classical actvities, Pieter has been playing since 2000 in the Sweet Jazz Orchestra, a semi-professional swing big band of Zemst (Belgium). Pieter played and improvised 4 years in the band ‘t Creatief Complot which performs many french songs of the 50ties and 60ties in the Brussels dialect. Within that project, Pieter recorded a CD with music of George Brassens in cooperation with the gipsyjazz guitarist Hans Mortelmans.

During the period of 2002-2003 Pieter studied in Lisbon (Portugal) as an erasmus student. Between 2004 and 2008 he taught in the music academies of Jette, Mechelen en Zaventem. Pieter has in 2008 also been accompanier in the musical departments of the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. In 2008-2009 Pieter will be accompanying dance classes in the international dance school P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels (cfr. Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker).

Since 2003, Pieter has been working as a freelancer with dance, theater and cabaretgroups and he regulary accompaniers choirs , orchestras and singers (eg. Johan Verminnen). In 2007-2008 repetitor/pianist for production houses like LOD (Gent), Music Hall, Musical Dreams (Antwerp) and BLINDMAN 4×4 (Brussels).

Since 2006 Pieter has been working with the singer Hannelore Muyllaert, together they arrange and perform french songs of Jacques Brel, Edith Piaf, Boris Vian etc. In july 2007 they recorded a live CD during the Gentse feesten (Gent, Belgium). In that summer, Pieter met Luc Apers, a magician, entertainer and stage performer, whom he accompanies during his shows since november 2007. Luc and Pieter will make a tour in Flanders and Brussels troughout 17 cultural centers.

As a composer, Pieter made 2 songs for the flemish youth mouvement Chiro in 2006 and 2007. Also he made a classical song for piano solo which was selected in the music academy of Mechelen (Belgium) as an obligatory piece for the graduating students in 2008.
